City's Rockcrest Stream Restoration Honored by Peerless Rockville
Award Recognizes Stewardship of the Environment

Rockville, Md., May 15, 2009 - The City of Rockville Department of Public Works was recently selected as a winner of a 2009 Peerless Rockville Preservation Award for the restoration and rehabilitation of the Rockcrest/Twinbrook stream located in Rockcrest Park. The awards committee unanimously recognized the City's stewardship of the natural environment and enhancement of an important neighborhood resource.

"The stream restoration project is a great example of the City's commitment to a green Rockville," said Craig Simoneau, director of the Department of Public Works. "We are honored that Peerless recognized the project and its benefits for the community."

To complete the project, the City restored the stream by reinforcing the stream banks, planting more than 200 new trees, replacing unwanted vegetation and moving an asphalt trail away from the stream. The stream restoration will minimize and control future erosion, reduce pollutants in the stream, enhance stream and forest habitat and preserve the existing recreational and park areas near the stream.

Peerless Rockville presents awards to community groups for programs, preservation work and quality design and construction that contribute to the city's architectural, cultural and environmental heritage.

The award will be presented on Thursday, June 11, at 7:30 p.m. in the Grand Courtroom of the Red Brick Courthouse in Rockville Town Center.
