Rockville to Participate in Statewide Seatbelt Initiative
Click It or Ticket Effort Continues with Checkpoint
Rockville, Md., May 29, 2009 - The Rockville City Police Department, in partnership with Montgomery County law enforcement agencies, will participate on Friday, May 29, in the Maryland Nighttime Seatbelt Initiative.
From 8-10 p.m., police will set up a seatbelt and safety seat checkpoint at Route 355 between Frederick Avenue and North Washington Street. About 20 law enforcement personnel from Rockville City Police, Maryland State Police, Montgomery County Police, Maryland-National Capital Park Police and Montgomery County Sheriff's Office will randomly stop cars to check for proper seatbelt and safety seat use.
"We expect to improve public awareness on the importance of using seatbelt restraining devices," said Sgt. Brian Paul, Rockville City Police coordinator. "In past years we have found that most people have their seatbelts on. We hope everyone will continue to buckle up each and every time they get behind the wheel."
Last year more than 2,000 vehicles passed through the checkpoint. Of those, 67 seatbelt citations or warnings were issued. The purpose of the checkpoint is to reinforce that drivers and passengers are expected to comply with seatbelt and safety seat laws.
This initiative is part of the Maryland Law Enforcement Challenge and the Click it or Ticket campaign.
