Rockville Celebrates Flag Day on Sunday, June 14

ROCKVILLE, Md., June 9, 2009-The City of Rockville will host an evening ceremony in honor of Flag Day on Sunday, June 14, at 7 p.m. in Town Square.

The City of Rockville honors the nation's flag every year with a Flag Day ceremony. The ceremony will include a reading of the Flag Day Proclamation by Mayor Susan R. Hoffmann and a history of the American flag by Elks Lodge No. 15 Leading Knight Ron Barber.

In 1907 the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Grand Lodge designated June 14 as Flag Day. The Grand Lodge of the Order adopted mandatory observance of Flag Day by all Elks in 1911. President Woodrow Wilson was prompted by the Elks to recognize the Order's observance of Flag Day. In 1949, when President Harry Truman, himself a member of the Elks, made the proclamation that thereafter June 14 would be a day of national observance for the symbol of the country.

Visitors are invited to join the City of Rockville in recognition of this national holiday to celebrate the history and impact of the American flag.

In addition to the ceremony, there will be events beginning at 6 p.m. that include a children's craft to make a family flag and a concert by the Fugitive Brass Quintet.

For more information, contact the Rockville Department of Recreation and Parks at 240-314-5022. The rain location for the event will be at the Elks Lodge, 5 Taft Court.
