Rockville Recognized for Efforts to Promote Commuting Alternatives

ROCKVILLE, Md., June 30, 2009-The Montgomery County Department of Transportation recognized the City of Rockville recently for its efforts to address issues such as traffic congestion and poor air quality through programs that promote transportation alternatives.

Rockville earned the county's annual Transportation A2CE Award -- "Advocates for Alternative Commuting Excellence." Rockville was honored with the award because of its Transportation Demand Management program, which includes designing and distributing 800 community resources packages to educate residents about transportation alternatives. The program also targeted some of Rockville's largest employers and worked with them on participating in a Commuter Challenge Program, which challenges commuters and residents to go car-free for one week.

Rockville was also honored because of its efforts to promote alternatives to driving, including the annual Bike to Work Day in which more than 100 people participated and providing a Zip car in Town Center.

"Rockville is so grateful to be recognized for its efforts to be a more environmentally-friendly city by promoting choices other than individual vehicles," said Mayor Susan R. Hoffmann. "We hope to continue seeking alterative forms of commuting for our residents and workers."

Rockville was also honored for offering subsidies for employees who are dedicated carpool or transit users. Montgomery County Commuter Services strive to enhance the quality of life by offering a comprehensive list of commuting options.
