Activities Begin to Celebrate the City of Rockville's 150th Anniversary
ROCKVILLE, Md., July 16, 2009-Rockville will mark its sesquicentennial - occurring after 150 years - anniversary as an incorporated city on March 10, 2010. The city received its incorporation from the state legislature on March 10, 1860.
As Rockville prepares to celebrate the 150th anniversary of its incorporation as a municipality next March, activities to commemorate the event begin with a call for entries for a photo competition and for memorabilia.
Rockville is also working with the Motor Vehicle Administration to have specialized license plates in honor of the 150th anniversary.
For the photo competition, the city is inviting photographers of all ages and experience to submit photo entries that will be part of a juried art exhibition in January 2010.
Photographs should be taken within the corporate city limits of Rockville and must have been taken between Jan. 1 and Sept. 30, 2009. The three categories for submission are people, nature and architecture. All photo techniques are eligible and submissions must be the work of the artist. Entries are due by Sept. 30. Submissions should be sent to the attention of Colleen McQuitty, Rockville City Hall, 111 Maryland Ave., Rockville MD 20850.
The City is also collecting memorabilia from residents. Rockville is asking people to loan the city photos, letters or artifacts, or to share their stories and memories, especially those from 1910 and 1960. All items and stories should be submitted by Sept. 30.
If you have items for submission, call Colleen McQuitty at 240-314-8606 or e-mail her at rockville150@rockvillemd.gov.
Residents who would like to purchase a specialty license plate commemorating the 150th anniversary of Rockville should call Marylou Berg at 240-314-8105 or e-mail her at mberg@rockvillemd.gov. At least 25 people must sign up for the commemorative plate in order for the MVA to offer them publicly.
