Rockville Elects New Mayor, Incumbent Council Members and Two Others
Results for the City's 62nd Election are Unofficial Until Tuesday, Nov. 10
ROCKVILLE, Md., November 3, 2009-Phyllis Marcuccio was elected to serve as the new mayor during the City of Rockville's 62nd Mayor and Council election. Incumbents John Britton and Piotr Gajewski, along with newcomers Bridget Newton and Mark Pierzchala were elected to the four council seats.
Marcuccio, who has served two, two-year terms on the City Council, won her first term as mayor, defeating incumbent Mayor Susan R. Hoffmann. Hoffmann served one term as mayor and three terms as a council member.
Marcuccio received 3,311 votes (52.22 percent). Hoffmann received 2,998 votes (47.28 percent).
Ten candidates ran for four open council seats. All will serve two-year terms. Bridget Newton was the top vote getter with 3,390 votes (14.91 percent), followed by incumbent Councilmembers Piotr Gajewski with 3,240 votes (14.25 percent) and John Britton with 3,056 votes (13.45 percent). Mark Pierzchala won the fourth council seat with 2,633 votes (11.58 percent).

There was a total of 6,406 votes (17.39 percent) cast in 10 voting districts throughout the city, as well as those of same day voter registrations and absentee ballots. Elections are nonpartisan and held every two years.
All results are posted on the City's Web site, www.rockvillemd.gov. Rockville 11 (Cable Channel 11) is expected to air a post election show featuring newly-elected mayor and council member interviews, beginning Wednesday, Nov. 4.
The new Mayor and Council will be sworn in during an inauguration ceremony at 1 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 22, at F. Scott Fitzgerald Theatre, 603 Edmonston Drive. The first meeting of the Mayor and Council will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 23.
