Exhibit Brings Rockville's Past and Present to Life
City Kicks Off Countdown to Its 150th Anniversary
ROCKVILLE, Md., December 30, 2009- The City of Rockville will start a yearlong celebration of the City's 150th anniversary of incorporation.
Rockville will celebrate its sesquicentennial–occurring at 150 years–anniversary of its incorporation on March 10. The city received its incorporation from the state legislature on March 10, 1860.
The countdown to the City's 150th anniversary begins with a photo exhibit, featuring a then and now retrospective, and 43 photos selected from resident photographers who captured Rockville through their own lens.
More than two dozen photographers, ranging in age, submitted photos of a variety of images from throughout Rockville, including images from Rockville events to sculptures in Rockville to development to recreation activities and people in the city.
In addition to the submitted photos, the exhibit will also feature a Then and Now exhibit, including images of Rockville's downtown through the years and those that reflect changes throughout the City.
The exhibit will also feature images of Chestnut Lodge. A fire ravaged Chestnut Lodge, an historic building that opened in 1889 as the Woodlawn Hotel, June 7.
The 150th celebration photo exhibit will open Sunday, Jan. 10, 1:30-3:30 p.m., in the Art Gallery at Glenview Mansion at Rockville Civic Center Park, 603 Edmonston Drive. The event will feature an opportunity to meet the photographers, speeches by Mayor Phyllis Marcuccio and members of the City Council, a concert by the U.S. Navy Band Chamber Ensemble and refreshments.
The exhibit will be open to the public daily through Feb. 2. Glenview Mansion is open 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday. Go to www.rockvillemd.gov/events/150 to learn more.
