Rockville Mayor and Council Adopt New "Green" Building Code
Rockville, Md., May 11, 2010 - At their Monday, May 10, meeting, the Mayor and Council adopted a revised version of Chapter 5 of the City Code, "Buildings and Building Regulations." The ordinance is effective July 1.
"This new ordinance is a great success for our community," said Susan Swift, director of Community Planning and Development Services. "We heard from residents and developers and together with the Environment Commission and staff crafted a set of regulations that enhances safety and Rockville's environment."
The updated building codes will apply to new construction and renovations, of both commercial and residential buildings.
The proposed ordinance adopts the latest editions (2009) of the International Codes and the 2008 National Electrical Code. The ordinance also adds a new article, Article XIV, titled, "Green Building Regulations," that requires increased energy and water efficiency in buildings and homes.
Printed copies of the ordinance and ICC codes are available for review at the Inspection Services Counter at City Hall, 111 Maryland Avenue. The ordinance is also available on the City's website at www.rockvillemd.gov/environment/built/codes.html.
