Rockville to Participate in Statewide Seatbelt Initiative
Click It or Ticket Effort Continues with Checkpoint

ROCKVILLE, MD, May 11, 2010 -- The Rockville City Police Department, in partnership with Montgomery County law enforcement agencies, will participate on Wednesday, May 26, in the Maryland Nighttime Seatbelt Initiative.

"We expect to improve public awareness on the importance of using seatbelts," said Cpl. Keith Swann, Rockville City Police Department coordinator. "In past years we've found that most people do wear their seatbelts. We hope everyone will continue to buckle up every time they get behind the wheel."

Last year more than 1,500 vehicles passed through the checkpoint. Of those, 75 seatbelt citations or warnings were issued. The purpose of the checkpoint is to reinforce that drivers and passengers are expected to comply with seatbelt and safety seat laws.

This initiative is part of the Maryland Law Enforcement Challenge and the Click It or Ticket campaign, which runs through the month of May.
