Rockville's Mayor Marcuccio to Lead Relay for Life as Honorary Chair
ROCKVILLE, Md., May 18, 2010-Rockville Mayor Phyllis Marcuccio will serve as honorary chair and guest speaker of the 2010 Rockville Relay for Life, Saturday, June 5. The American Cancer Society's overnight fundraiser will take place at the athletic track at Montgomery College, Rockville Campus, 51 Mannakee Street. The opening ceremony, featuring cancer survivors and the Mayor, is scheduled for 2 p.m.
"These types of events are very important to me because I've had family members with cancer," said Mayor Phyllis Marcuccio. "There aren't many families that haven't been impacted by cancer and until we've got it licked, I'm supportive of efforts to find a cure."
Relay For Life events are held overnight as individuals and teams camp out with the goal of keeping at least one team member on the track or pathway at all times throughout the evening. Teams do most of their fundraising prior to the event, but some teams also hold creative fundraisers at their campsites during the event.
As part of the event, a Luminaria Ceremony will take place at 8:30 p.m., honoring the community's cancer survivors and remembering those lost to the disease. Participants will circle a track that is surrounded with glowing luminaria that bear the name of someone who has battled cancer.
The event is expected to end at 7 a.m. Sunday morning.
Team and individual registration is still open. Participants are asked to raise $100 for the relay. For more information visit www.relayforlife.org.
