St. Elizabeth's Fourth-Grader Named Rockville 'Mayor for a Day'
ROCKVILLE, Md., May 21, 2010 - Riley Lightfoot, a fourth-grader at St. Elizabeth's School, is Rockville's winner of the 2010 "If I Were Mayor I would..." essay contest, sponsored by the Maryland Municipal League and the Maryland Mayor's Association. Rockville's winner is appointed Mayor for a Day.
The theme this year is Using Community Volunteers. Participants answered questions such as how would you get citizens to volunteer, what jobs would you give them and why, and how would you thank them and encourage them to volunteer in the future.
Riley was one of 2,038 fourth-graders across the state to participate in the "If I Were Mayor I Would..." contest.
"This contest is such a great way to introduce youngsters to government and public service," said Rockville Mayor Phyllis Marcuccio. "I'm looking forward to discussing volunteerism with Riley and to hear more of her ideas."
As Mayor for the Day, Riley will spend a day at City Hall, receive recognition at a Mayor and Council meeting and participate in the annual Memorial Day parade. On Tuesday, May 25, Riley will spend her day as Mayor touring the City's facilities and participating in a police ride-along that includes a stop at her school. At 12:30 p.m., Mayor Marcuccio will host lunch for Riley at Slice of Rockville on Nelson Street.
"The jobs I would give my volunteers would be Clean Up Day," Riley wrote in her essay. "Another job I would be volunteering for a day where you could read to children or just help out at any school."
Riley also wrote about using brochures, a Web site and neighbors talking to one another as ways to enlist volunteers for the city.
One winning essay was selected from each of the MML's 11 regional districts throughout the state. The 11 winners were awarded $100.
