Click It or Ticket Effort Educates, Saves Lives

Rockville, Md., June 3, 2010 - The Rockville City Police Department, in partnership with Montgomery County law enforcement agencies, participated on May 26 in the Maryland Nighttime Seatbelt Initiative. More than 1,300 vehicles passed through the seatbelt safety checkpoint.

From 8-10 p.m., police set up a seatbelt and safety seat checkpoint at Route 355 between Frederick Avenue and North Washington Street. Law enforcement personnel from Rockville City Police, Maryland State Police, Montgomery County Police, Maryland-National Capital Park Police and Gaithersburg City Police Department stopped cars to check for proper seatbelt and safety seat use.

Of the 1,328 vehicles that passed through the checkpoint, 40 seatbelt citations were issued, 68 seatbelt brochures were distributed and one DWI (Driving While Intoxicated) arrest was made. The purpose of the checkpoint is to reinforce that drivers and passengers are expected to comply with seatbelt and safety seat laws.

This initiative is part of the Maryland Law Enforcement Challenge and the Click it or Ticket campaign.
