Rockville to Host Flag Day Ceremony
ROCKVILLE, Md., June 11, 2010 -Rockville will host a Flag Day ceremony on Monday, June 14, at 6 p.m. at City Hall, 111 Maryland Ave. The ceremony will include the reading of the Flag Day proclamation by Mayor Phyllis Marcuccio and a presentation of the history of the flag by Exalted Ruler Art Walker from the Washington-Rockville Elks Lodge #15. Guests are welcome to enjoy refreshments following the ceremony at the Elks Lodge, located at 5 Taft Court.
The American Legion Post #86 and Boy Scout Troop 1450 will be in attendance. The Rev. James Meyers of St. Raphael Catholic Church will deliver the invocation and benediction.
In 1907, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Grand Lodge designated June 14 as Flag Day. The Grand Lodge of the Order adopted mandatory observance of Flag Day by all Elks in 1911. In 1949 President Truman, a member of the Elks, proclaimed that June 14 will be a day of national observance for the country's flag.
Visitors are invited to join the City of Rockville in recognition of this national holiday to celebrate the history and impact of the American flag.
