Twinbrook Station Named State Transit Oriented Development Site
ROCKVILLE, Md., June 22, 2010 - The State of Maryland has named the Twinbrook Station development in Rockville one of 14 Transit Oriented Development (TOD) Designated Sites statewide. The designation may provide additional funding, resources, tax credits, and state and federal support for the project.
According to Maryland Department of Transportation's website, www.mdot.maryland.gov/Planning/TOD/TOD_Designation, the state selected the designated developments because they are good examples of TOD, have strong local support, and can succeed with a reasonable amount of state assistance.
TOD projects are typically dense, multi-use developments located within walking distance of transit stations that encourage increased use of public transportation and reduced use of cars. TOD reduces sprawl, lessens environmental impacts and creates walkable communities.
The Twinbrook Station development is a partnership between The JBG Companies and Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA). When complete, the project, adjacent the Twinbrook Metro station on the red line, will be a 2.2-million-square-foot, mixed-use community.
The first phases of the project, featuring 279 apartments and 15,000 square feet of retail space, were completed in April. At full build-out, the project will include multi-family residential with 1,595 units; 220,000 square feet of ground-floor retail; 325,000 square feet of Class-A commercial space and a new park.
Twinbrook Station has also been designated a Smart Growth project by the Washington Smart Growth Alliance, received the International Charter Award for Excellence from the Congress for the New Urbanism and was the first project in the Washington, DC, area to be awarded Stage 2 LEED for Neighborhood Development Gold-level certification for its plan.
