Lakewood Bridge to be Removed
Portions of Wootton Parkway to Close During Work
ROCKVILLE, Md., July 12, 2010 -The City of Rockville will be replacing the pedestrian bridge located over Wootton Parkway between Lindley Terrace and Keynes Lane. The bridge connects Glenmore Terrace and Lakewood Elementary School.
The bridge was closed Feb. 3, following an inspection that revealed issues with the bridge's structural integrity. Since then, pedestrian detour signs were put in place and the Mayor and Council unanimously approved on June 21 a design/build contract with Fort Myer Construction Corporation.
The bridge replacement project will take place in two phases: removal and installation.
The existing bridge, which is 111 feet long, will be removed on Thursday, July 15, beginning at 9 p.m. and continuing approximately three hours. Portions of Wootton Parkway will be closed in both directions during that time and a detour will be in place.
Wootton Parkway will be open to local traffic at Keynes Lane and Lindley Terrace. Variable message boards are in place to alert motorists to the detour.
The multi-use path along Wootton Parkway in the area of the bridge will also be closed, but detours will be put in place.
Contractors will use a large crane to remove the bridge and will place it on the south side of Wootton Parkway, which will block the multi-use path. While Wootton Parkway will reopen to motorists, the path will remain closed until the bridge can be removed on Saturday, July 17. A detour will be set up for path users.
The work to disassemble and remove the bridge on Saturday is expected to last until the evening. There will be a one-lane road closure on Wootton Parkway during that time.
Maps of the various detours can be found on the City's website at www.rockvillemd.gov/residents/publicworks/lakewood_bridge.
Design completion for the new bridge is expected during the week of July 12. Once the final design is approved, fabrication of the new bridge will begin. The fabrication of the bridge is expected to take seven to nine weeks. The installation will take up to five days to complete after the new bridge has been delivered to the site from the plant in Minnesota.
