Stonestreet Avenue Bridge to be Removed
No Road Closures Expected During Work
ROCKVILLE, Md., March 4, 2011 -The City of Rockville will be replacing the pedestrian bridge located over the CSX and Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) rail tracks near Route 355. The bridge connects Stonestreet Avenue and Viers Mill Road.
The bridge was closed Feb. 3, 2010, following an inspection that revealed issues with its structural integrity. Since then, pedestrian detour signs were put in place and the Mayor and Council unanimously approved in November a contract with Concrete General to remove the bridge.
Work to remove the existing bridge, which is 120 feet long, as well as the concrete path and steps on either side of the bridge, will begin Sunday, March 6, and conclude in the early morning hours Friday, March 11. The final steps to remove the bridge are scheduled to take place late Thursday, March 10, into early Friday, March 11, weather permitting. No roads are expected to close during the removal project.
If the bridge removal is delayed because of inclement weather, it will be rescheduled for the early morning of Friday, March 25.
Because the hours that work can be performed are limited by the operations of train and Metros, all work during the week will take place between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. No train or Metro service will be affected.
Following the bridge removal work, the Mayor and Council must approve a new bridge design contract in early spring. After the contract award, the City will seek community input on the design elements of the new bridge.
