ROCKVILLE, Md., March 15, 2011 -Rockville will host a group of more than 100 Japanese exchange students and an additional group of Rockville High School students Wednesday, March 16, at Rockville Civic Center Park. The teens will perform community service work, including picking up and removing trash and tree debris from 2:30-3:45 p.m.
The Japanese students, who attend Yokohama Hayato High School, are visiting the United States and staying in Rockville through the Sakura Educational Exchange USA, a Rockville nonprofit organization.
The Japanese school offers an International Language Course in which the focus is on English education and fostering an environment for students to become active internationally in the future.
The visiting students, who are 10th-graders, and five teachers are visiting for two weeks. The students spend weekday mornings studying conversational English taught by American English Instructors and weekday afternoons and weekends becoming immersed into American life through various trips and activities.
The theme of the study abroad program is "Community Service and Interacting with Americans." Each student will participate in several community service activities, including the community service project at Rockville Civic Center Park.
