Free Wireless Internet Now Offered at Most Rockville Facilities
Rockville, Md., April 12, 2011 – Visitors to most City of Rockville facilities can now access the Internet free of charge with wireless devices.
"Providing free wireless helps to solidify Rockville's position as a leader among communities," said Mike Cannon, chief information officer. "With more than 93 percent of residents connected to the Internet, this is a service the community expects."
The City's Information Technology Department has finished installing and testing free WiFi "hot spots" at the following facilities:
The Mayor and Council initiated the project and provided $15,000 in the Fiscal Year 2011 operating budget.
According to Burt Hall, director of the Recreation and Parks Department, Internet access is a strong selling point in renting City facilities. "When organizations are looking for a place to rent for a conference or retreat, they often seek Internet access as part of the package."
