Rockville Councilmember Britton to Represent COG on Air Quality Council

ROCKVILLE, Md., May 16, 2011—Rockville Councilmember John Britton received an appointment from Maryland Department of the Environment Secretary Robert Summers to the Maryland Air Quality Control Advisory Council.

The Air Quality Control Council is responsible for reviewing and advising the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) in air quality rules and regulations being considered for adoption that would achieve air quality and public health goals, as well as protect the environment. The council is also responsible for evaluating state-level measures to meet air quality standards, proposed legislation and strategic plans.

"I'm excited to get involved in the committee to further expand Rockville's role in clean air issues throughout the region," Britton said.

Britton also serves as vice chairman of the Metropolitan Washington Air Quality Committee for the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (COG), a regional organization dedicated to the environment, affordable housing, economic development, health and family concerns, human service, population growth, public safety and transportation. Britton will represent COG on the state Air Quality Control Advisory Council.

Britton has served as a member of the Board of Directors for the Washington Metropolitan Council of Governments for the past four years.

The Maryland Air Quality Control Advisory Council was established in 1967 to give MDE advice on proposals. The council is comprised of 15 members.

Britton, who was elected to the Rockville City Council in 2007, will serve a five-year term. He is serving his second term on the City Council and served for four years on the City's Planning Commission including one year as chairman.
