Rockville Awards Program Honors Citizen Led Efforts to Improve the Environment
ROCKVILLE, Md., May 16, 2011 - The Rockville Mayor and Council honored residents, businesses and youth groups recently for their efforts to support the City's goal to achieve environmental sustainability.
Rockville resident Eileen Schempp earned the Carl Henn Outstanding Individual Environmental Stewardship Award. The award was renamed in September following the tragic death of longtime Rockville resident Carl Henn who was known as a committed environmental advocate.
Schempp earned the award for her long-standing participation in the City's Save Our Streams program, which relies on volunteers for stream monitoring, and the Adopt-A-Stream program.
Schempp has served as the team leader for the Watts Branch monitoring team, and has volunteered countless hours to organize and promote the event, as well as ensure that the team has the necessary equipment and supplies needed. She also serves as the team leader for her adopted stream in the Cabin John Watershed.
Rockville's Environmental Excellence Awards program was developed in 2003 to raise public awareness and promote the environmental achievements for projects and practices in the city. In addition to the Carl Henn Individual Environmental Stewardship Award, awards are given in three other categories:
Organizations, businesses and individuals can receive awards. The Environment Commission organizes and chooses award recipients.
The Community Wildlife Habitat Team, which includes David Davis, Peter Givan, Audra Lew, Amanda Rockler and Julie Super, was recognized with the Outstanding Leadership in Environmental Practices award.
The Cambridge Walk II Development was recognized with the Outstanding Leadership in Environmental Practices award for its efforts to reduce stormwater runoff.
Rockville High School Environmental Youth Program was recognized with the Outstanding Environmental and Academic Achievement award for its work to install a rain garden and a conservation landscaping demonstration project that captures runoff from a ball field.
The Rockville Ice Arena Solar Energy Team was recognized with the Outstanding Achievement in Green Building Technology or Design for its efforts to activate one of the largest solar energy systems in Maryland. The team is made up of Standard Solar Inc., Rockville Blades LLC, The Maven Group LLC and Montgomery Youth Hockey Association.
