St. Elizabeth's Fourth-Grader to Serve as Rockville 'Mayor for a Day'
ROCKVILLE, Md., May 19, 2011- Isabella Varea, a fourth-grader at St. Elizabeth's School, is Rockville's winner of the 2011 "If I Were Mayor I would..." essay contest, sponsored by the Maryland Municipal League and the Maryland Mayor's Association.
Rockville's winner is appointed Mayor for a Day. Isabella's day as mayor will take place Friday, May 20, beginning at 9:30 a.m. and ending at 2 p.m. Isabella will spend her day as mayor touring the City's facilities, participating in a police ride-along that includes a stop at her school, and eating lunch with Mayor Phyllis Marcuccio.
The theme for this year's "If I were Mayor I would..." contest was Working Together Works, answering questions such as what things would you improve or change to make your city a better place to live, how would you encourage your citizens to work together to make these improvements and how would you recognize your citizens for working together to achieve a common goal.
In her essay, Isabella stressed the importance of working together to keep the citizens in her community happy and healthy.
"Once a week, my community would unite and work together to do various projects," Isabella wrote in her essay. "For instance they would build greenhouses and plant community gardens to grow organic food and keep the citizens healthy. I would do my best to make my community one of the most popular places for families to live in the United States."
In addition to spending her day at City Hall, Isabella will participate in the annual Memorial Day parade and receive recognition at the June 6 Mayor and Council meeting.
"I hope she walks away with the feeling that government is approachable," Marcuccio said. "You need to be comfortable with the people who are making decisions for you."
One winning essay was selected from each of the MML's 11 regional districts throughout the state.
