Rockville's 23rd Annual Hometown Holidays Kicks Off Summer in Rockville

ROCKVILLE, Md., May 24, 2011 -The 23rd annual Hometown Holidays celebration takes place Memorial Day weekend and features more than 40 bands and entertainers, children's activities, Taste of Rockville and an Art and Craft Festival.
George Clinton & Parliament/Funkadelic, who have been entertaining audiences for decades with their blend of funk and rock, will headline the main stage on Sunday. The man known to many as the Godfather of Funk is known for hits such as "Give up the Funk," "Flashlight," "Atomic Dog" and "Not Just Knee Deep."
Bob Schneider, an independent artist, will headline the main stage Saturday. Schneider has released five albums, hundreds of digital singles and fronted three bands simultaneously, and recently released "Lovely Creatures."
In the days leading up to the festival, celebrate with the Hometown Holidays Giveaway Week. Enter every day this week through Friday for a chance to win great prizes for Hometown Holidays. Names will be randomly drawn each day at 4 p.m. Learn more at www.rockvillemd.gov.
Each year more than 60,000 people descend on Rockville's downtown to celebrate summer with more bands and entertainers performing on eight stages, children's activities and Taste of Rockville.
This year's festival will also include an Art and Craft Festival, featuring more than 50 artisans showcasing their one-of-a-kind handcrafted artwork, a free style dance stage for anyone to show off dance moves, a Sunday night teen party on The Rooftop and a sampling of art demonstrations.
In addition to Saturday and Sunday's activities, the festival also features the 67th annual Memorial Day ceremony and parade Monday, May 30, including a performance by the Rockville Concert Band and Chorus.
Concert performances start at 9 a.m., followed by the ceremony at 9:30 a.m. and the parade at 10:30 a.m.
Bob Royce, a retired pharmacist who served in the Army's 87th Infantry Division, will serve as the parade grand marshal and Brian van de Graaff, the morning weather forecaster for Good Morning Washington, ABC 7 News, will serve as emcee.
