New Rockville Maps Available on City Website

Rockville, Md., June 10, 2011 – The City of Rockville has unveiled new Geographic Information System (GIS) maps on its website at www.rockvillemd.gov/gis. The maps offer an improved look and feel, easier navigation and detailed information about each property parcel in the city.

The website features a map of stormwater management utility fee estimates, a forest conservation easement map and a map of Rockville's urban tree canopy.

Highlights of the new maps include:

• The map design and function is more contemporary and comparable to familiar online map services such as Google and Bing.
• Bookmarks are included to quickly return to a map location. Users can add and save their own bookmarks.
• Overlays are used to highlight and locate places of interest (Rockville neighborhoods, historic districts, parks, City facilities and schools). Where available, places of interest will include links to web pages for more information.
• Mark-up tools are convenient for drawing on the map with text labels and shapes to highlight map points and areas. Mark-ups can be saved for re-use and shared with other users.
• The printing function produces formatted maps with title areas and also provides a preview image prior to printing.

The maps include a help function for users and the website features a series of video tutorials with step-by-step instructions about how to navigate the maps and complete common mapping functions.
