Rockville Councilmember Bridget Donnell Newton to Serve on Maryland Municipal League Legislative Committee
ROCKVILLE, Md., July 18, 2011 —Rockville Councilmember Bridget Donnell Newton was re-appointed to serve on the Legislative Committee for the Maryland Municipal League, a nonprofit and nonpartisan association that represents 157 municipalities and two special taxing districts in Maryland.
"I am very honored to have been chosen to serve on the Legislative Committee for another term," Newton said. "The advocacy on the part of MML staff and this committee for the return of some portion of HUR funds contributed greatly to Rockville receiving more than $700,000 for FY12, and we will continue to push for full funding for FY13."
The Maryland Municipal League's mission is to strengthen and support municipal government through advocacy and development of effective leadership. The Legislative Committee determines MML's legislative program and chooses those legislative proposals received from member chapters or municipalities that best exemplify the goals of all MML members.
"Municipalities are the closest form of government to the people, and we bear the greatest responsibility for those areas that affect the quality of daily life for our citizens," Newton said. "I have been very impressed with the willingness of our state and federal elected officials to listen and work with the MML Legislative Committee on our local priorities, and look forward to another year of positive collaboration."
The Maryland Municipal League was founded in 1936, and through its membership in the National League of Cities, offers legislative representation in Washington, D.C.
Newton, who was elected to the Rockville Council in 2009, will serve on the Legislative Committee through June 2012.
