Rockville Police to Participate in Statewide ‘Toward Zero Deaths’ Initiative in City of Rockville
Aggressive Traffic Safety Efforts Aimed to Cut Fatalities During Maryland’s Deadliest Month

Rockville, MD The Rockville City Police Department is joining law enforcement agencies throughout Maryland to put an end to traffic fatalities. During August, traffic safety enforcement operations are being elevated as a part of a statewide effort called Toward Zero Deaths.

“Historically, August has been the deadliest month for traffic-related fatalities in Maryland,” said Rockville’s Police Chief Terry Treschuk. “This year the public can expect a greater police presence on our roads, especially at night.”

Between 2005 and 2009, 63 percent of the 2,275 vehicle occupant deaths involved speeding, impairment or lack of seat belt use. There have been more traffic-related deaths in the month of August between 2001 and 2010, and night time enforcement operations are proving even more critical as enforcement operations escalate.

“Even one more death is too many,” Treschuk said. “Rockville City Police officers are committed to public safety, and we know that many dangerous behaviors occur at night. People are more likely to drive impaired or not wear their seat belt, and we will have a zero tolerance enforcement policy for these violations.”

Throughout the State of Maryland, highly visible traffic enforcement will be present on all roadways in August, beginning with Smooth Operator, the statewide aggressive driving prevention campaign. DUI and seat belt patrols, as well as DUI checkpoints will be present throughout the rest of the month.

“The message we’re sending is simple,” Treschuk said. “Slow down, drive sober and wear your seat belt – day and night. We want everyone to be able to enjoy your time out, and more importantly, arrive home safe and sound.”
