Rockville Hosts Walk to School Day, Wednesday, Oct. 5
Annual Event Promotes Safe Routes to School, Pedestrian Safety

Rockville, Md., September 13, 2011 – The City of Rockville invites students and schools to participate in the 14th annual International Walk to School Day, Wednesday, Oct. 5.

The event is part of the Safe Routes to School initiative for which the City of Rockville receives federal grants. The program is a way for community leaders, parents and schools to encourage and enable more children to walk or bike to school safely.

Walk to School Day was created to spotlight safer routes for walking and bicycling, and to emphasize the importance of increasing physical activity, implementing pedestrian safety, reducing traffic congestion, protecting the environment and building connections between families, schools and the community.

Rockville’s participation in Walk to School Day also supports the City's pedestrian safety campaign, Smart Steps. Smart Steps encourages drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians to be vigilant when using the roads and safely share the streets to reduce the likelihood of accidents and injuries.

Individuals or schools interesting in participating in Walk to School Day may contact Jon McLaren at 240-314-8625 or jmclaren@rockvillemd.gov.
