Rockville to Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month
Free Community Event Planned Saturday, Oct. 1

Rockville, Md., September 19, 2011 – The City of Rockville and the Rockville Latino Alliance will host a free community celebration in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month Saturday, Oct. 1, from 4 to 7 p.m. in Rockville Town Square.

In the case of rain this event will be canceled.

The celebration will include music by the Calpro Group, under the Artistic direction of Ramon Cala, and Tahuantinsuyo Inca; and dances performances from Argentina, Paraguay, Mexico, Bolivia and Studio 310. Information booths about community services will be available for Latino families from the City of Rockville, Priority Partners, Kaseman Clinic, Community Ministries of Rockville, Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Montgomery County, Montgomery County Federation of Families, National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Montgomery County and the Kaiser Permanente Mobile Health Vehicle. In addition, the embassies of Mexico, Paraguay and Venezuela will offer consular services to residents.

In September 1968, Congress authorized President Lyndon B. Johnson to proclaim National Hispanic Heritage Week, which was observed during the week that included Sept. 15 and 16. Congress expanded the observance in 1988 to a month-long celebration (Sept. 15-Oct. 15), effective the following year.

Approximately 14 percent of Rockville’s population is Hispanic or Latino according to the 2010 Census.
