 Permit Definitions

The following definitions have been provided to assist users in understanding terms unique to Permits Online and the City of Rockville's permits and tracking system. If you have any questions or suggestions for additions to this page please contact  permits@rockvillemd.gov.

Activities: 

Activities are used to track tasks or milestones over the life of the permit. During the application phase, Activities can be viewed to determine which departmental reviews have been completed and which are outstanding. After a permit is issued, Activities are used to schedule and to track the results of inspections.

Case:

An application or a permit can also be referred to as a Case. 

Conditions:

Conditions are typically added to a permit prior to issuance. Conditions highlight requirements that are special or unique to a specific application or property. Conditions can range from special tree protection to additional inspection requirements. 

Denied:

Denied refers to the status of an application or permit.  An application has been denied when it has not met the City's criteria.

Finaled: 

Finaled refers to the status of an issued permit.  A Finaled permit indicates that all required inspections have been satisfactorily completed.

Issued: 

Issued refers to the status of a permit application.  An Issued permit indicates that the application has been approved and inspections can be scheduled.

Navigation Bar:

The Navigation Bar is located below the City of Rockville masthead at the top of a web page. The Navigation Bar provides links to various sections and services within Permits Online. 

Navigation Links: 

Navigation Links are located in the Navigation Bars below the City of Rockville masthead at the top of a Web page. 

Parcel Number:

The Parcel Number is a number that is unique to a property. The Parcel Number can be used for search functions on many of the Permits Online search pages. 

Property Status:

Permits Online will display property information for Active (A) and Retired (R) properties. Care should be taken to select a property with the correct status. 

Received:

Received refers to the status of an application.  A Received application is one that has been entered into the City's permit tracking system.

Status:

The term Status appears in several locations throughout Permits Online.

Property Information:
A property may be either Active or Retired.

Applications or Permits:
Applications or Permits can have several statuses including: Received, Pending, Issued and Finaled.
 

Activities:
Activities can have several statuses including:

Cancelled

CONT

Contingent

DONE

Passed or Completed

FAIL 

Inspection Failed

HOLD

Hold

PASS

Inspection passed

OBSV

Observed

PEND

Pending

Suspended:

 

Suspended refers to the status of an application or permit.  An application or permit may be Suspended for a number of reasons one of which could be because plans submitted require additional information. 

Tags:

Tags are property specific attributes, notices, alerts, conditions or warnings that may affect the future use or development of the property. Examples of tags include flood plain, WSSC jurisdiction, etc. The Tags appearing in the City of Rockville's tracking system should not be considered as an exhaustive list of conditions that might affect a property. Owners, prospective purchasers and other interested parties should conduct their own independent research to determine all conditions that may affect a property. 

Void: 

Void refers to the status of an application or permit.  A status of Void indicates that no required action has taken place by the applicant or permit holder for at least 6 months.

Withdrawn:

Withdrawn refers to the status of an application or permit.  A status of Withdrawn indicates the application has been returned to the applicant at their request.
