National Night Out

National Night OutNeighborhoods throughout the City of Rockville participate annually in the nationwide crime prevention initiative, National Night Out Against Crime. Each year, neighborhood events take place on the first Tuesday of August in more than three dozen communities throughout Rockville.

Each community hosts its own block party that includes activities such as cookouts, moon bounces, giveaways, carnival games, prizes and a chance to spend time with neighbors. McGruff the Crime Dog will visit several of the scheduled block parties, where he spreads his anti-crime and anti-drug message.

The Rockville Mayor and Council, Rockville City Police Department officers and members of the Montgomery County State's Attorney's Office also visit many of the block parties. National Night Out is a unique crime and drug prevention event that is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch. The event is more than 25 years old. It's aimed at raising awareness about crime and drug prevention, generating support for anti-crime programs, strengthening community spirit and community policing partnerships, and sending a message to criminals that neighborhoods are fighting back against crime.

Neighborhoods Gather to Fight CrimeNational Night Out

National Night Out is an effective and enjoyable way to promote a police-community relationship through cooperative efforts to keep neighborhoods safe from criminal activity. National Night Out helps in strengthen the commitment the community has to safety and to let the criminal element know that neighborhoods are organized and willing to fight back.

The block parties and cookouts held throughout Rockville on National Night Out also help neighbors to get to know each other better. The Mayor and Council and Rockville Police officers visit as many of the celebrations as possible to talk with community members and to hear any concerns they may have.
