Holiday Collection | Choose Your Cart Sizes for Recycling and Refuse | Rockville will phase in a new once-per-week, semi-automated, curbside program beginning the week of October 27, 2008. To determine if your home is located in Phase 1, please locate your address using the interactive map, and scroll down to see detailed information about your current recycling and refuse collection day, your new collection day, whether your are in Phase 1 and your new collection start date. A series of meetings will be held to address any questions or concerns, and to provide additional information. At the meetings, carts will be available to help determine the size each household will need. The same information will be available at each meeting and you can drop in any time during the event. Rockville's new recycling and refuse program has several new features: - Single Stream Recycling - Glass, Metal, Plastic, Mixed Paper and Cardboard – Collected at the curb in the City-provided brown cart on your collection day. Must be out by 6 a.m.
- Refuse – Collected at the curb in the City-provided gray refuse cart on your collection day. Refuse must be out by 6 a.m.
- Yard Waste - Grass Clippings: place in biodegradable paper bags or easily emptied 32-gallon, rigid containers and set at the curb on your collection day. Brush and Branches: cut into lengths of not more than 5 feet and organized in bundles not more than 2 feet in diameter. No more than 10 bundles maximum will be collected. Place at the curb.
- Spring and Fall Leaf Collection - Place unbagged leaves at the curb by 6 a.m. on the collection dates. Sticks and all other objects need to be removed from the leaf piles.
- Special Collections – All recycling and refuse items that do not fit into your brown and gray carts. Includes bulky items such as appliances and furniture. You must call 240-314-8568 to schedule an appointment. Residents receive six special collections annually.
- Hazardous Items - Call 240-314-8568 for a collection appointment.
- Removal of Dead Animals - Call Animal Control at 240-314-8930.
| Recycling and refuse WILL NOT be collected on the following City holidays:- New Year’s Day
- Martin Luther King Jr.’s Birthday
- Memorial Day
- Independence Day
- Labor Day
- Thanksgiving Day
- Christmas Day
Please note: If a holiday falls on a weekday and your regularly scheduled collection day is on or after the holiday, your collection will be delayed by one day. Friday collections will be done on Saturday. | Only Phase 1 homes can choose carts. How to Choose Recycling and refuse carts are available in four sizes – 32, 48, 64 and 96 gallons. - 32-gallon cart is equivalent to one 32-gallon can, or one-and-a-half blue recycling bins
(24.25"L x 19.25"W x 38.50"H) - 48-gallon cart is equivalent to one-and-a-half 32-gallon cans, or two blue recycling bins
(28.75"L x 23.50"W x 37.50"H) - 64-gallon cart is equivalent to two 32-gallon cans, or three blue recycling bins
(31.75"L x 24.25"W x 41.75"H) - 96-gallon cart is equivalent to three 32-gallon cans, or four-and-a-half blue recycling bins (35.25"L x 29.75"W x 43.25"H)
Choose carts to accommodate the largest recycling/refuse weeks of the year, such as holidays or when hosting houseguests. Please note: - The City has expanded its recycling program and now takes more items than it did previously. You may need more recycling capacity than in the past. All recyclables, including paper and cardboard, glass, plastics and cans, will be placed into your new recycling cart.
- Some households may need more than one cart. To request an additional cart, call 240-314-8568. A second cart cannot be requested online.
Order Your Carts Select the cart sizes that fit your needs, one for recycling (brown) and one for refuse (gray).
