Based on requests and comments received from Calvin Lane residents, a concrete sidewalk with a continuous two-foot buffer is scheduled to be implemented on the south (odd-numbered) side of Calvin Lane between Gladstone Drive and Dean Drive in 2006. A concrete sidewalk linking the new Calvin Lane sidewalk to Calvin Park, along Gladstone Drive, also will be implemented as part of this project. The History of This Project:
The City of Rockville received requests in 2004-05 from residents who live on Calvin Lane to construct sidewalks. This request supports the Mayor and Council’s goal to improve pedestrian safety. This project also supports the City's goal to improve access and create a safer route for students walking to Calvin Park and to Meadow Hall Elementary School. Funds to implement the sidewalk were secured through the City’s Capital Improvements Program budget in Fiscal Year 2006.
On March 29, 2006, City staff conducted a public meeting to share concept designs for alignment of a sidewalk on Calvin Lane and to hear feedback. The two concepts presented at that meeting were designed using feedback received at a "walking block" meeting with residents of Calvin Lane on October 4, 2005, and during a three-week comment period after that meeting. Of the two concepts presented on March 29, 2006, Concept 1 was the preferred concept based on comments received during a three-week comment period after that meeting.
The reverse side of this page provides a brief description and overview image of the preferred sidewalk alignment. The image can be viewed in greater detail by visiting the following Web link: http://www.rockvillemd.gov/residents/traffic/calvin-sidewalks.htm. Next Steps:
Staff is completing a construction bid package and will choose a contractor in mid-summer. Barring unforeseen difficulties or problems, construction of the Calvin Lane sidewalk and the connecting sidewalk along Gladstone Drive is scheduled to begin in early September 2006.
Residents will receive notification of final planned construction dates at least two weeks prior to the commencement of construction.

- Five-foot wide sidewalk entire length of Calvin Lane on the south/east (odd-numbered) side
- Two-foot wide buffer between curb and sidewalk
- Driveway aprons will be replaced. Replaced aprons will connect safely and properly to driveway outside of the City right-of-way.
- 26 trees expected to be removed
- 30 trees will be planted as replacements, per the City's Street Tree Master Plan
- Staff is preparing a construction contract that allows residents to negotiate with the contractor for driveway improvements and tree removal outside of City rights-of-way at "volume" rates.
The following is a rough sketch of where the sidewalk will be implemented. This sketch also shows locations for removal and replanting of trees. For detailed engineering drawings, see:
