Traffic Calming to be Installed at the Intersection of Baltimore and Woodburn Roads

As part of Rockville’s ongoing effort to protect residential neighborhoods from vehicles traveling at unsafe speeds, City staff has been working with citizens to implement a comprehensive traffic calming plan along Baltimore Road between Maryland Route 28 and Twinbrook Parkway.

Background:
The City of Rockville organized three public meetings, held on May 2, 2000, September 21, 2000 and January 30, 2001.  As a result of the comments and findings raised at the meetings and in the field, and after preliminary survey and engineering was done, a comprehensive proposal was released in April 2001.  (This study is available at Rockville’s Department of Public Works).  In addition, staff informed the Burgundy Estates Civic Association of this project at their spring meeting.

The entire project is included in the City’s Capital Improvements Program and will be phased in during the coming years according to scheduling and financial considerations.  In 2002, the bike path along Baltimore Road from Gladstone to Broadwood Drives was completed.

Status:
The City will be implementing the next phase of the traffic calming plan, a three-inch raised intersection at Baltimore and Woodburn Roads.  The raised intersection will slow traffic and make drivers more aware of the presence of pedestrians.  The project will also include curb ramps and striped crosswalks across Baltimore Road.

This project will be constructed by Concrete General and the expected completion date is October 15, 2004.

If you have any questions or would like more information on this project, please contact Sandra Marks, Traffic and Transportation Division (240-314-8509, smarks@rockvillemd.gov) or Bo Ferguson, Assistant to the City Manager (240-314-8105, bferguson@rockvillemd.gov).
