Rockcrest Park Stream Restoration Project
Construction to begin in September

Construction of the Rockcrest Park stream restoration project is scheduled to begin in September by a contractor hired by the City of Rockville:  Meadville Land Services, Inc., Meadville, Pennsylvania.   The construction impacts will involve tree removal, temporary mulch trails, excavation and grading, invasive plant control spraying and removal, and stream diversion pumping.   The contractor will be using heavy construction equipment such as excavators, loaders, pumps, and dump trucks to complete this project.   Construction access will be from City streets adjacent to the park.  Pedestrian access through the park will be maintained at all times.  This project will be completed in conjunction with the Alsace Lane stream restoration project. The Mayor and Council approved the construction award at their July 31, 2006 meeting.

The Rockcrest Park stream restoration will repair moderate erosion throughout the park and severe erosion in the vicinities of the culverts for Ardennes Avenue and Atlantic Avenue.   This project will protect the asphalt trail, basketball court and play equipment.  Stabilizing the streams adjacent to these culverts will protect adjacent residential properties that are near the stream.  The project also will protect three crossings of the sanitary sewer line.

The Rockcrest Park stream restoration area is approximately 3,900 linear feet and is located within the park from the Broadwood Avenue outfall to the City limits below Atlantic Avenue.  The restoration measures consist of:  decreasing the slope of the stream banks, installing bank toe protection devices, installing grade control devices, and removing of debris jams and unsafe trees.  The project also involves installing vegetative stream revetments, tree protection, reforestation, and invasive plant controls.

The stream restoration project will provide environmental benefits such as:  reducing pollution by decreasing soil erosion along stream banks, controlling invasive plants, increasing riparian buffer and habitat, and protecting the existing forest.
