You are probably already aware that the City is well into its annual street re-paving program for this summer. Contractors have been busy making concrete and asphalt repairs to all of the streets designated for repaving. Approximately 14 miles of city streets will be repaved this summer. On or about Monday, August 16, the final phase of this program will begin. This is a two-step process. No parking signs will be posted marked with a two-three-day window in which each phase of the work should occur. During both phases of the work, “No-Parking” signs will be posted at least 48 hours ahead of the work and indicate a two- to three-day window for the parking restrictions. We would appreciate your cooperation in trying to adhere to these parking restrictions. If you are home during the day, you may be able to leave your car on the street until the work is actually in the vicinity of your block. However, the contractor and City staff will not notify anyone of the coming work and, if needed, cars will be towed regardless of whether someone is home or not to move it. The first phase is a “milling” operation. The existing asphalt edge of both sides of the street will be ground down and removed to just below the edge of the concrete curb. This operation moves fairly quickly and should tie up each block of the street for only an hour or two. Access to driveways should only be affected for brief periods of time, generally no more than 10 to 15 minutes. Large mechanical brooms and a vacuum sweeper truck will closely follow the milling operation to remove loose material. A few days later, the second phase is completed. This is the placing of a complete new asphalt surface from curb to curb. This operation runs a little slower and should affect each block for about three to four hours. Immediately prior to placing the hot asphalt, the contractor will spray a “tack coat” of liquid asphalt onto the street surface. This is done in strips of about 500 feet ahead of the paving machine. Please DO NOT attempt to drive through this liquid asphalt. It may damage your tires, stick to your car and be tracked onto your driveway surface. The new asphalt surface is safe to drive on after it has been rolled for compaction and allowed to cool, generally, about 15 minutes after the paving operations have passed your driveway. Access to each driveway should be blocked for no more than an hour. If the paving operations are still close to your driveway, please check with the contractors’ personnel before attempting to drive onto the street. Fresh asphalt is very hot when initially placed (about 250 degrees Fahrenheit) and cools slowly so pedestrians should be extremely careful and children should NEVER be allowed to play around the new surface. Both operations will be performed between the hours of 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, except City recognized holidays.
