Project History
This project is a part of an ongoing effort to protect neighborhoods and create an exceptionally built environment. The project was approved during the 2004-2005 Town Center Traffic Calming Process, which aimed to proactively address traffic concerns in city neighborhoods. The development of this project has included a survey of residents’ concerns and potential solutions, and two public meetings resulting in the development and discussion of a preliminary concept design, followed by a recommended final concept design based on residents’ input.
Recommended Final Concept Design
Below is a summary of elements in the recommended final concept design:
- Three crosswalks with appropriate "Ped Crossing" signs at Grandin Avenue/Woodburn Road
- Signs: Local Traffic Only 7-9 AM and 4-6 PM (four locations off Veirs Mill Road)
- Portable Variable Speed Sign (rotate among locations), then select a permanent location
- Warning Sign: “Cross Traffic Does Not Stop at Grandin Avenue/Broadwood Drive”
A map showing these elements and their locations is available on the City of Rockville web site at:

Next Steps
We invite citizens to comment on the staff recommendations by contacting Anis Tannir, Transportation Engineer, at 240-314-8510 or via e-mail at atannir@rockvillemd.gov. The comment period will be three weeks ending September 28, 2007. Following the comment period, staff will develop a final design incorporating comments made by the community as appropriate. A notice of the final design will be sent to residents with implementation to follow soon after.
Implementation
Implementation is to begin in late October 2007 and be completed by the end of December 2007, weather permitting. Notice of a follow-up public meeting will be sent to the community about six months after construction is completed and a preliminary evaluation of the results is conducted by the City of Rockville Traffic and Transportation staff.
