Fleet Street Pedestrian Improvements

To improve pedestrian safety, and to provide safe routes for students walking to Richard Montgomery High School, the City of Rockville will install pedestrian improvements along Fleet Street, between Monroe Street and Jefferson Plaza.  Construction will begin in late October 2007 to be completed by late November 2007, weather permitting.  The City will implement the following improvements as shown on this map:

  1. Installation of a 12 ft. curb extension on the north side of Fleet Street at Park Avenue to shorten the pedestrian crossing distance and to improve visibility.

  2. Construction of a median on Fleet Street at Park Avenue to provide a pedestrian refuge at the crosswalk, to improve visibility, and to act as a traffic calming measure through road-narrowing.

  3. Installation of a sidewalk on the north side of Fleet Street, between Park Avenue and Monroe Street, where a sidewalk is currently missing.

  4. Replacement, widening, and upgrade of the existing sidewalk on the north side of Fleet Street, between Park Avenue and Jefferson Plaza.

Other improvements include the placement of fluorescent school crossing signs at the Fleet Street and Park Avenue crosswalk, a “PED X-ING” road pavement marking in advance of the crosswalk, and the application of rumble strips on Fleet Street, east and west of the crosswalk.

To accommodate the pedestrian improvements, some on-street parking spaces on the north and south sides of Fleet Street, between Monroe Street and Jefferson Plaza, will be removed.  If you have any questions, please contact Carrie Sanders, Transportation Planner II, 240-314-8529, csanders@rockvillemd.gov.
