Neighborhood Advisory

Call for Comments:
Traffic Diversion Plan at the intersection of
Watts Branch Parkway and Hurley Avenue

The City of Rockville has received a petition from residents who are concerned with the high number of vehicles traveling on Watts Branch Parkway.  In response to the petition, the City has conducted a traffic study to evaluate vehicle traffic on Watts Branch Parkway.  This study showed that there are a high number of vehicles traveling south on Watts Branch Parkway during the morning peak hours, between 7 and 9 a.m., Monday through Friday.  According to the City’s Guidelines for Neighborhood Traffic Management, Watts Branch Parkway meets the eligibility requirements for a traffic diversion plan.

The City staff is proposing to install a “No Left Turn 7 - 9 AM Monday - Friday” sign on Hurley Avenue (see map).  This sign is designed to prevent southbound vehicles on Hurley Avenue, coming from West Montgomery Avenue (MD 28), from turning left onto Watts Branch Parkway during weekday morning peak hours.  The proposed sign should address the high volume of cut-through traffic.  While the City has installed traffic calming devices such as speed humps along Watts Branch Parkway, this road continues to have a large amount of cut-through traffic.  Therefore, the City is proposing to install this sign as a further measure.

A public comment period for the proposed “No Left Turn 7 - 9 AM Monday - Friday” sign will be held through Friday, December 14, 2007.

If you have any questions about the project or would like to submit comments, please contact Rebecca Torma, City of Rockville Department of Public Works Transportation Planner II, at 240-314-8527 or via e-mail at rtorma@rockvillemd.gov.
