Neighborhood Advisory

Traffic Calming: Grandin Avenue
Between Reading Terrace And Nimitz Avenue
Final Design

Project History
This project was initiated in response to residents’ concerns about the volume and speed of cut through traffic along Grandin Avenue.  Grandin Avenue runs parallel to Viers Mill Road (MD586), a major East-West arterial in the City of Rockville.  The project was approved during the 2004-2005 Town Center Traffic Calming Process, which aimed to proactively address traffic concerns in City neighborhoods.  The development of this project followed the City of Rockville’s Traffic Calming Process which included the submission of a petition by the residents, a survey of residents’ concerns and potential solutions, two public meetings resulting in the development and discussion of a preliminary concept design, and the development of a recommended final concept design by staff based of residents’ input.  Two letters were received requesting additional signs for local traffic only on Grandin at Woodburn with an increase in the time restriction to 6-9 a.m. and 4-7 p.m.

Final Design:
Below is the summary of elements of the final design:

  • Crosswalk on three sides with appropriate "Ped Crossing" Signs
  • Sign:  Local Traffic Only 6-9 a.m. and 4-7 p.m. (in five locations)
  • Portable Variable Speed Sign (Rotate Among Locations), then select a permanent location
  • Warning Sign:  “Cross Traffic Does Not Stop”

A map showing those elements and their locations is available at the City of Rockville web site at: http://www.rockvillemd.gov/residents/traffic/pdf/Grandin_Traffic_Management_1107.pdf

Implementation
Implementation will begin immediately and will be completed by end of December, weather permitting.  Notice of a follow up public meeting will be sent to the community about six months after construction and a preliminary evaluation of the results is conducted.
