Final Community Meeting to Discuss
Pedestrian Safety & Traffic Calming Alternatives
On Watts Branch Parkway at Aintree Drive

Wednesday, December 1 at 7 P.M
Rockshire Community Room, 2351 Wootton Parkway

Purpose of Meeting: As part of Rockville’s ongoing effort to improve pedestrian safety throughout the city and to implement the Mayor and Council’s Pedestrian Safety initiative, City staff has been working with citizens to develop a plan to improve pedestrian safety at the intersection of Watts Branch Parkway and Aintree Drive.  Due to vehicular volume and speeds along Watts Branch Parkway, it is difficult for pedestrians to safely cross this intersection.  Based on these factors, the Rockshire Homeowners Association (HOA) and the City are jointly sponsoring a meeting to review two alternatives for this intersection.

Background: The Rockshire HOA and division staff held a community meeting on July 1 to determine the best pedestrian safety/traffic-calming device for the intersection. The group supported the staff recommendation for two medians with a raised crosswalk.  A larger community meeting was held on October 18 to review the recommended facilities.  At that meeting, there was not consensus among the community to implement the proposed medians and raised crosswalks. Community members requested that another meeting be held to review additional alternatives for the intersection.

A follow-up meeting will be held December 1 at 7 p.m. to present two alternatives and determine if a consensus can be reached to move forward.  The event will be held at the Rockshire Community Room (below the Giant parking lot), 2351 Wootton Parkway.

If you have any questions or would like to discuss this project prior to the December 1 meeting, contact Larry Marcus, Chief of Traffic & Transportation, at 240-314-8505 or Katherine Kelly, Transportation Planner, at 240-314-8527.

The following images, plus images showing detailed engineering, are posted on the City of Rockville’s Traffic & Transportation Division Web site at www.rockvillemd.gov/residents/traffic/index.html, under the heading “Traffic Engineering/Traffic Calming.”

Alternative A: Raised Crosswalk with Median   Alternative B: Raised Crosswalk, No Medians
