The City of Rockville has received a petition from residents who are concerned with the high number of vehicles traveling on Watts Branch Parkway. In response to the concerns, the City has conducted a traffic study to evaluate vehicle traffic on Watts Branch Parkway. This study showed that there is a high number of vehicles traveling south, during the morning peak hours, between 7 and 9 AM, Monday through Friday. According to the City’s Guidelines for Neighborhood Traffic Management, Watts Branch Parkway meets the eligibility requirements for a traffic diversion plan.
The City staff is proposing to install a “No Left Turn 7 - 9 AM Monday - Friday” sign on Hurley Avenue. This sign is designed to prevent vehicles traveling on Hurley, coming from West Montgomery Avenue/MD 28, from turning left onto Watts Branch Parkway during weekday morning peak hours. The proposed sign should address the high volume of cut-through traffic. While the City has installed traffic calming devices, such as speed humps along Watts Branch Parkway, this road continues to have a large amount of cut-through traffic. Therefore, the City is proposing to install this sign as a further measure. The purpose of the new sign is to keep traffic on West Montgomery Avenue/MD 28.
A public comment period for the proposed “No Left Turn 7 - 9 AM Monday - Friday” sign will be held through Friday, January 25, 2008. If you have any questions about the project or would like to submit comments, please contact:
