Improving Your Water System
As part of Rockville’s Water Line Replacement Program, the Department of Public Works (DPW) will be replacing over 30 miles of underground pipe in our water system, which assures you – our customer – continued dependable water service that operates efficiently. The improvements provide assurance that water pressure and flow in your home or business, as well as essential fire protection, will be sustained at all times. This program meets the Mayor and Council’s goal for a sustainable infrastructure.
Water Line Replacement Program
DPW has analyzed the City’s water system and found that aging water pipes (50+ years old) have developed interior corrosion, which decreases water flow by reducing space inside the pipe. This program will replace water pipes prioritized based upon pipe condition, water break history, and adequacy of water flow to fire hydrants.
How Will This Work Affect You?
Each water line replacement project is a three-step process: Perform a field survey, complete a design and construct the water main upgrades. To perform the field survey, MISS UTILITY will begin by marking gas, telephone, cable, and electric lines. DPW Maintenance Crews will be marking sanitary sewer, storm drain, and water pipes. You will see various colored spray paint markings delineating the utilities in the street, on the sidewalk, and in your yard.
After these utilities are marked the City’s consultant (Charles P. Johnson and Associates) will conduct a field survey to gather all existing features along the water main (see map on reverse side of this advisory). You will see the consultant’s crews and their vehicles on your street with surveying equipment. Surveyors may be on your property in order to locate your water meter and the City pipe that connects your water meter to the pipe in the street.
Schedule
We expect to start the survey work and marking utilities this summer/fall and complete a design in 2009. Construction is planned for 2010. A second advisory will be mailed to you when the design is completed with a construction schedule and another advisory mailed two weeks before construction starts.
