Improving Rockville's Sewer System
The Department of Public Works (DPW) will be replacing portions of the sanitary sewer main within the vicinity of Great Falls Road, Dale Drive, and Laura Lane.  The existing sewer runs outside of the public right-of-way on private property in undesirable locations.  The subject sewer is around 20-feet deep in some areas and dates back to 1914.  DPW responded to a sewer backup at 406 and 408 Great Falls Road in May 2008.  Work was completed to address the back up, but additional measures are needed to ensure future impacts are avoided.  Due to the pipe depth, age, trees, and vicinity to residences, DPW will design and construct an alternative alignment for the sewer. 

The preferred alignment of the sewer main is within the City’s right-of-way and off of private property.  Once the survey data is obtained, more information will be known and a feasible alignment selected.

How Will This Work Affect You?
The sewer line replacement project will be conducted in a three-step process: 

• Perform a field survey
• Complete a design
• Construct the sewer main upgrades 

To perform the field survey, MISS UTILITY will begin by marking gas, telephone, cable, and electric lines.  DPW Maintenance Crews will be marking sanitary sewer, storm drain, and water pipes.  Residents will see various colored spray paint markings delineating the utilities in the street, on the sidewalk, and in their yards.  Then the City’s consultant (Charles P. Johnson and Associates) will conduct a field survey (see map on reverse side of this advisory).  Surveyors may be on your property in order to locate the sewer main and house connections, as well as, all other utilities.

Schedule
The survey work and marking of utilities will start this summer/fall and the design will be completed in 2009.  Construction is planned for 2010.  Once the survey data is gathered and a feasible alignment determined, a meeting will be scheduled in the community to review the existing and proposed conditions.  At least two community meetings are planned to review the project.
