| The City of Rockville is engaged in an ongoing effort to improve pedestrian safety throughout the City and to continue implementing the Mayor and Council’s Pedestrian Safety initiative. As part of this effort, construction will begin shortly on a sidewalk on the west side of Mannakee Street, from Beall Avenue to Carr Avenue. City staff held a meeting with residents of Mannakee Street on August 31, 2005 to discuss potential alignments for a sidewalk. At that meeting, staff received support to implement the sidewalk construction. The scope of the project consists of removal of trees in the City right-of-way, followed by sidewalk construction. If trees do not need to be removed in order to install the sidewalk, their branches may be trimmed. The four-foot-wide sidewalk will be placed six inches behind the existing utility poles to keep the new sidewalk as close to the street as possible. All driveway aprons will be replaced as part of this project. Driveways will not be accessible during the apron construction. The contractor will notify each resident of the duration of driveway apron construction. The project is scheduled to begin in late October and to be completed by mid-November 2005. If you have any questions or would like more details on the project, please contact Katherine Kelly, a Transportation Planner for Rockville, at 240-314-8527 or at kkelly@rockvillemd.gov.
