Columbia Gas Pipeline
The Columbia Gas Company owns a pipeline that runs underground through the Flint Ledge Estates, Carter Hill, Woodley Gardens, Plymouth Woods, and College Gardens neighborhoods. Columbia’s maintenance of their pipeline requires surveying and marking their 26-inch pipe and right-of-way, mowing and clearing the right-of-way, and inspecting the pipeline.
Surveying and marking of the pipeline in Rockville is underway. Columbia will temporarily mark the pipeline with yellow flags and the right-of-way with blue tape. In order to mark the line, Columbia Gas may be required to mow, clear vegetation and remove shrubs and trees. If property owners have installed improvements in Columbia’s right-of-way, the gas company will provide advance notice that the improvements must be removed.
After clearing the right-of-way, Columbia’s contractor will test the integrity of the pipeline. The test is non-invasive and involves running a wire along the ground to collect pipeline condition data.
The May/June 2010 Rockville Reports included an article about Columbia’s work. The City sent postcards and Columbia Gas sent letters to properties in the vicinity of the pipeline. Door hangers will be placed at residences 2 to 3 days before clearing begins. The City will closely monitor the maintenance work and will continue to keep affected residents and neighborhoods informed.
