Dog and Pet Licensing

Dog licensing is handled by the Neighborhood Services Division located in the Police Department on the ground level of Rockville City Hall, 111 Maryland Ave., Rockville, MD 20850.

All dogs older than four months are required to be licensed. No City of Rockville license is required for cats.

STAGGERED LICENSING

On January 26, 1998, the Mayor and Council formally adopted a change in the Animal Control Ordinance that now allows the City of Rockville to issue dog licenses on a staggered basis. This will allow the coordination of the expiration of both the dog’s license and rabies certificate.

Are cats to be licensed in the city of Rockville?
No, but they must have a current rabies vaccination at all times.

What is the cost for a dog license?
Altered dogs - $.50 per month up to the rabies expiration date. Unaltered dogs - $1.00 per month up to the rabies expiration date.

At what age is a puppy to be licensed?
After the first rabies vaccination (4 months of age).  A puppy cannot be licensed until it has had its first rabies vaccination.

When are the “Off-Leash” testings held?
The third Saturday of every month.  Dog owners must register with Neighborhood Services Office prior to testing.

Location:  355 Martins Lane (Outdoor Pool Parking Lot)
Time:  10:00 a.m. sharp (Due to the heat, testing will begin at 8:00 a.m. sharp in July, August and September.)
Cost:  $5.00 per dog

What is the “Leash Law” in the city of Rockville?
All dogs and cats are to be on a leash when not on personal property.

Does the city of Rockville hold free rabies clinics?
The City of Rockville participates in the Montgomery County Animal Shelter’s rabies clinics.  These clinics are held
beginning in late Spring through September.  You can call the Neighborhood Services Office for the current schedule.
Rabies shots are free, however, the owner must purchase the city license.

How do I go about registering my dog?
The Neighborhood Services Office can mail you an application or you may
download the registration form.
