Pepco Installs New Meters

Pepco began installing advanced digital meters—also called "smart meters"—in homes and businesses that Pepco serves in June. The installation is part of the Advanced Metering Infrastructure initiative that the Maryland Public Service Commission authorized in August 2010.

Pepco will send a letter to customers one to four weeks before installation of the new meter is scheduled for their home or business. Pepco’s contractor, Scope Services, will perform the meter installations. When customers receive the letter about the scheduled time, they will also receive a fact sheet, describing the installation process and what needs to be done to prepare for the meter exchange.

When the installation occurs, residents and business owners will see white trucks with the Scope Services and Pepco names on them. Workers will wear blue shirts and tan khakis.

During the meter exchange, there may be a brief power interruption of up to five minutes. If a customer is registered in Pepco's Emergency Medical Equipment Program, the meter installer will contact that household prior to installation.

If you have questions about the new meters or the installation, call the Pepco Customer Call Center at 202-833-7500. More information is also available on Pepco’s website at www.pepco.com/energy/blueprint/smetersmd/.

The Advanced Metering Initiative is a long-term investment that Pepco believes will improve reliability and customer service.
