Rockville City Police Department

id eye stickerWhat is Operation Identification?

It's a program that has proven to be effective in reducing burglary in communities where it has been properly implemented.

 Operation Identification Has Three Parts

  1. Marking all of your valuables so that they can be identified as belonging to you. Use an electric engraver or Tungsten Carbide Marking Pen to mark all valuables with your driver's license number followed by the letters MD (Maryland). If you do not have a driver's license the Motor Vehicle Administration will issue an identification number to you upon your completion of a special form they provide. An engraver can be obtained from the Community Services Officer of the Rockville City Police Department
  2. Record a description of your valuables. You should complete two copies of the form. Keep one copy in a safe place around you home and the second copy in your office or another secure location such as a safe deposit box. It's also a good idea to take color photographs of valuables that cannot be marked, and file the pictures with the copies of the form.
  3. Display an Operation ID sticker on your windows or doors. These stickers can be obtained from the Community Services Officer of the Rockville City Police Department. Operation ID stickers tell would-be burglars that the valuables stolen from your home or office will be hard to dispose of and, if found in their possession, are evidence of their guilt.
