Great Falls Road Sanitary Sewer Replacement Project
The History
A sanitary sewer pipe that is 1,600 linear feet and nearly 100 years old, and partially located within private property must be moved to better serve residents. The sanitary sewer pipes are located along Great Falls Road, Dale Drive, Laura Lane and Evans Street.
The age and condition of the pipe has led to sanitary sewer backs ups. It is now necessary to replace and relocate the pipe to improve the City's infrastructure and to allow the Public Works Department to properly maintain the sanitary sewer.
The Project
The sanitary sewer pipes will be relocated from Great Falls Road to Evans Street.
The pipes range from eight to 12 inches in diameter and are located as deep as 20 feet. (Existing pipe | Proposed pipe)
Project Timeline
The work to replace the sanitary sewer pipes and manholes has been completed. Great Falls Road, Laura Lane, Dale Drive and Evans Streets will be repaved by the City in the spring of 2012.
The Cost
The Mayor and Council approved on June 6 the award of a contract to Laurel-based Humphrey and Son, Inc., for $913,453. In addition to the Great Falls Road and Dale Drive sewer replacement project, the award included two additional sanitary sewer replacement projects on Beall Avenue and South Adams Street.
The cost of the work at the Great Falls Road and Dale Drive is $784,388. The contractor will begin its work on the Great Falls Road and Dale Drive project with the other locations to follow. Humphrey and Son, Inc. have successfully completed other utility projects for the City.
Federal funding through an Environmental Protection Agency grant will pay for 55 percent of the cost of the project.
