The next session of Rockville University will begin September 19, 2007 Rockville University will run from Wednesday, September 19 to Wednesday, November 14, 2007. Classes are held at the Senior Center from 7:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. with the exception of two Saturday morning classes (field trips) starting at 9:00 a.m. and ending at 12 noon. What is Rockville University?Rockville University is a free, 8-week citizen awareness program sponsored by the Mayor and Council and the City of Rockville. With a class-like atmosphere, this program strives to teach Rockville residents about the city’s history, its government, and its neighborhood leadership issues. Through weekly lesson plans, take-home assignments, field trips, and tours, Rockville University will help you develop the skills necessary to get involved in your community. Why is it important?Everyone wants to be part of a healthy, functioning community. Rockville University works toward this goal by: - Creating resident awareness and access to community resources
- Demystifying local government
- Humanizing public service
- Providing networking opportunities among residents, neighborhoods, and City officials and staff

Who may attend?
Rockville University is open to any Rockville citizen older than 16 who is curious about the dynamics of their community, likes hands-on learning, and enjoys having fun. Class size is limited to 25 people, and participants must be able to attend most classes. - Learn about the Council/Manager form of government
- Visit City facilities such as the Water Treatment Plant, Gude Drive Maintenance Facility, Rockville Senior Center, Rockville Municipal Swim Center, community recreation centers, and City parks
- Discover ways to get involved in City Hall and your community
- Tour Rockville neighborhoods
- Find out what each City departments does and how it impacts you
How long are classes, and when do they take place?Semesters are typically eight to ten weeks long and take place once in the spring and once in the fall. Each class, held once during the week, is usually two to three hours and, depending on the topic, takes place one evening during the week (usually Tuesdays or Thursdays) or on Saturday mornings. A graduation ceremony attended by members of the Mayor and Council concludes the program, and students who have successfully completed the program, receive diplomas.
