Water Main Flushing Area Map

A systematic Citywide flushing program to remove accumulated fine sediment from the City water system is underway and is expected to be completed in late June.

To minimize the inconvenience to City customers, flushing operations are performed between 10 p.m. and 6a.m.

The program will remove an estimated 80% of accumulated sediment, primarily iron and manganese oxides, from the system.

The sediment, which causes some water discoloration problems in the City, is removed from the pipes by the planned opening of fire hydrants. Although the presence of fine iron and manganese oxide sediment in the system does not pose any public health hazard, the discoloration caused by the natural accumulation of the sediment can be aesthetically objectionable to City customers.

As flushing takes place, some temporary discoloration of water may occur. The City suggests that customers refrain from laundering clothes during periods of discoloration in their areas, usually two or three hours.

The flushing program will be scheduled in the future years to continue the control of build up of sediment in the City water mains and to assure the consistent delivery of aesthetically acceptable high quality water to City users.

Any questions about the program may be directed to the Public Works Operations at 240-314-8567.
